Here we go again . . . . another week has flown by. . . .
and another prompt set for us by Tess of Magpie Tales
The Fruit and Veggie Shop
There once was an old grocery store
which sold nutritious produce galore
It's windows were full.
There was never a lull
in custom to buy more and more.
From outside the windows looked cute,
pitching every conceivable fruit.
Yet inside showed greens;
Sprouts, peas and beans
and large cabbages - whatever might suit.
There were big ripe firm red tomatoes
And sackfuls of all kinds of potatoes
and all kinds of rices
at very good prices
I can still hear my Mum saying clear,
"Eat your veggies and fruit like a dear,
They'll make you grow strong,
And your life will prolong
And make you be kind and sincere!"
That's shallot . . . .
. . . . well I could have said onion but that would have made you cry!
( hm! . . . . I wonder if Mum was right!)
Some people are surprised and touched by my use of the word "sincere". Well, it was the only word to mind that seemed to scan and rhyme with "clear" and "dear" . . . . ROFL

I don't feel I have done the Grocery Store full justice so I have done another piece in Broad Shakespearean
about how great this guy feels he is:
Click FURY IN MOTION to meet Harley, the beast
. . . . if you dare!!!
. . . . and bring a crash helmet . . . . we're going for the ride of your life!!

What a charming little store! I need to open one of those around here in our little town!
ReplyDeleteI can just see you with a store like that Don with all the produce you lovingly nurture . . . . it would fit so well :)
DeleteSounds like Mom had it right! And I'd shop there too. :o)
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary.
DeleteI think it is a great little grocery store . . . and yes my Mother, Hazel, was a very kind and wonderful woman . . . :)
Well, she obviously was right!
ReplyDeleteNow thats my kind of poetry! We grew up with funny poems like that and could all write reams of it.

Nuts in May
Well she was always telling us to eat our greens wasn't she, big sister.
DeleteThis type of poetry is far easier to write and we almost grew up doing it didn't we? . . . . Eddie x
I know exactly what you both mean - funny poems were imbibed along with our mother's milk, I reckon! And that was one thing that couldn't be bought along with the groceries. LOL
DeleteWe were always writing silly poems to our cousin Sylvia and family . . . . No Mum and Dad were entirely responsible for what you get today . . . . lol
DeleteI have little doubt that she was right. I suspect you've grown up to be kind and sincere.
ReplyDeleteWell, I had to say it Stephen . . . . because no-one else would? . . . lol
DeleteMy mother had a wonderful sense of humour and I have inherited just a piece of it! . . . . . :)
When I lived in NYC, I used to visit fruit and vegetable shops like the one you evoke above. I miss them. Most supermarkets don't have the variety or the freshness, so I really appreciate the farmer's market season.
ReplyDeleteHi Theresa
DeleteYes sadly supermarkets don't have that freshness.
In UK were had what is kown as the 'corner grocery shop', one on almost every corner before the days of supermarkets . . . :)
Hi Eddie .. great variety of poems you are all creating .. love this - and yes I suspect we're pretty good specimens of fresh fruit and veg and eating them up ..
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary
Thank you Hilary.
DeleteRead somewhere we are what we eat! Good job I don't look like a bag of crisps! . . . . Eddie :)
Hi Eddie .. I commented and whipped away before it was taken .. I love the different poems and stories we get from the prompts ...
ReplyDeleteI suspect our mothers got us just about right ... and certainly healthy with our veg and fruits ... cheers Hilary
Hi again . . . . Yes sometimes I hit the send button too soon before I have finished the comment . . . thanks Hilary . . . . cheers :) Eddie
DeleteAnd all grown in Limerick. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dr FTSE . . . . . . and boy don't I know some Limericks . . . . . lol
DeleteLove these types of shops. There are many dotted around our city and I enjoy seeing all the colourful produce set up on stands outside. Prices sure have risen though!
ReplyDeleteHi Suzie,
DeleteI am surprised these shops exist still with the continuing forward march of the super markets.. Nuce to know you still have them in Canada . . . . ~ Eddie :)
nuttin bettah than REAL food! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteYes . . . . not the same any more . . . cheers! :)
DeleteThe tragedy lies in the past tense dunnit ?
ReplyDeleteYes . . . . true . . . . :)
DeleteEat veggies and fruit to stay strong and sincere--what a charming thought. My dad eats onions like someone else might eat apples. I wonder if that's the reason why I always thought of him as strong, sincere and most definitely super-human. ;-)
ReplyDeleteLOL . . . used 'sincere' because it rhymed with 'dear' and 'clear'.
DeleteBetween the apples and the onions I bet your dad was very verbal down below. Is that what you mean't by super-human?? . . . . . . ROFL
Thanks Magaly . . . always a riot when we meet . . . . ;-) yourself !
Love it - and I'd love to stick up in that store.
ReplyDeleteOK - we'll do a Bonnie and Clyde on it . . . . :)
DeleteOh, well, I've arrived late...do you have any fruit left? Please, apple for me....~ Excellent! Enthusiastic! Vibrant! Healthy! Limerick!
ReplyDeleteBetter late than never . . . .here is your apple.
DeleteThanks for your encouraging comment .. ~ Eddie :)
Harley! Quite popular in India too!
ReplyDeleteYes, they were/are good bikes :)
Delete"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" and "Carrots will make it so you can see in the dark!" Yes, all those wonderful sayings to inspire us to eat our fruits and veggies. But finally there would be "Better clean your plate, there are children starving in_____(pick a country). Oh sweet days of our youth!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginny . . . . . happy days they were . . . ~ Eddie :)
DeletePower to the produce.........and listening to our mums! Really enjoyed this, Eddie!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Helena - glad we listened to our Mums . . . :)
DeleteI love fruits and veggies shop!
ReplyDeleteThis look nice.
We have here too!
Hi Gloria - glad you like the shop and it's good you have them in Chile.
DeleteWe don't have many now because of the big supermarkets. Shame . . . . Have an orange! . . . lol :)
Thanks!
DeleteWe have big supers too:)
But I love these little stores an there are many of these in some little places.
So glad you have little stores like this shop. So important fall all the ingredients for your wonderful cooking creations . . . . ~ Eddie :)
